About Padparadscha

Padparadscha is the rarest and most valued variety of corundum (sapphire), displaying a unique pinkish-orange to orange-pink color evoking the hue of a lotus blossom or Sri Lankan sunset, derived from a combination of iron and chromium. The name comes from the Sanskrit-Sinhalese word for the aquatic lotus flower, and the color definition—neither pure pink nor pure orange—is a subject of ongoing debate among gemologists. The finest padparadscha sapphires originate from Sri Lanka, with other sources in Madagascar and Tanzania, and top gems command extraordinary premiums in fine jewelry.
