About Odontolite
Odontolite, also known as bone turquoise, is a fossilized dinosaur or mammal bone or tooth stained a vivid blue to blue-green color by iron phosphate (vivianite) during fossilization, creating a material that closely resembles turquoise in color and appearance. The finest odontolite historically came from the Jurassic deposits of southern France (Tarn, Lot) and was used in medieval Europe as a turquoise substitute set in jewelry and decorative objects before gemological analysis revealed its true nature. It is now primarily of historical and paleontological interest.
