About Moss Agate
Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) containing green, red, brown, or black dendritic (tree- or moss-like) inclusions of chlorite, hornblende, or manganese/iron oxides that create landscape or botanical patterns resembling moss, ferns, or forests within the translucent white to gray stone. It forms in weathering and hydrothermal environments, with notable sources in India, the United States (Montana, Wyoming), Australia, and Brazil. Long associated with nature spirits and agricultural fertility in various folk traditions, moss agate is fashioned into cabochons, beads, and carvings.
