About Jet
Jet is an organic gemstone formed from the fossilized carbonized wood of the Araucaria conifer tree under high pressure over millions of years, producing a velvet-black, lightweight material that takes a brilliant polish. The finest jet historically came from Whitby on the Yorkshire coast of England, where it was formed during the Jurassic period and was fashioned into mourning jewelry popularized during Queen Victoria's reign following the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Jet has been carved into beads, cameos, and amulets since the Neolithic period, with significant archaeological finds from ancient Spain and England.
