About Iris Agate
Iris agate is a variety of banded chalcedony agate that displays spectacular rainbow iridescence—flashing spectral colors including violet, blue, green, yellow, and red—when light passes through very thin, closely spaced banding at the right angle. The phenomenon results from light diffraction by the fine microcrystalline layers, analogous to the effect seen in soap bubbles, and is most dramatically seen in thin slabs backlit or transmitted light. Sources include Brazil, Montana (USA), and Mexico, and thin polished slabs of iris agate are among the most visually stunning of all agate varieties.
