About Hackmanite
Hackmanite is a sulfur-rich variety of sodalite that displays a remarkable tenebrescence—reversibly turning from colorless or pale pink to deep violet or purple on exposure to UV radiation or sunlight, then fading back to pale tones in darkness. It was first described from Greenland in 1901 by Finnish geologist Victor Axel Hackman, and notable gem-quality sources include Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Canada. This unique photochromic behavior makes hackmanite one of the most scientifically fascinating collector gemstones.
