About Ceylonite
Ceylonite is the dark, iron-rich variety of spinel ranging from dark green to nearly black, named after Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where it was historically recovered from gem gravels alongside other spinels and sapphires. The dark color results from elevated iron content that absorbs most visible light, reducing the brilliance characteristic of lighter spinels. While less commercially significant than red or blue spinel, ceylonite is collected as a natural curiosity.
