Andesine is an intermediate plagioclase feldspar that became widely known as a gem material in the early 2000s when red to orange specimens were marketed as a new discovery from Tibet and Mongolia. It can display an attractive labradorescence in some specimens, as well as strong color in red, orange, and green hues. Considerable controversy surrounds much commercial andesine, with evidence suggesting many stones are artificially color-enhanced by copper diffusion treatment.
