November's two birthstones, topaz and citrine, share warm golden hues that echo the autumn season. Topaz occurs in a remarkable range of colors, with imperial topaz (a rare orange-pink variety from Brazil) being the most prized. Citrine, a variety of quartz, ranges from pale yellow to rich amber and is one of the most affordable colored gemstones available.
Traditional Birthstone
Topaz is the traditional November birthstone, though historical references to 'topaz' are complicated by centuries of gem misidentification. The name may derive from Topazios, the ancient Greek name for an island in the Red Sea (now Zabargad) that actually produced peridot. True topaz, an aluminum fluorine silicate, was not clearly distinguished from other yellow gems until modern mineralogy.
Modern Birthstone
The modern November birthstone list includes topaz (primary) and citrine (added as an affordable alternative). Imperial topaz from Ouro Preto, Brazil, in warm orange to pink-orange shades is the most valuable variety. Blue topaz, almost always produced by irradiation and heat treatment of colorless topaz, dominates the commercial market in Swiss, London, and Sky Blue shades.
Symbolism & Meaning
Topaz symbolizes affection, strength, and intelligence. Ancient Egyptians believed topaz was colored by the golden glow of the sun god Ra. In Hindu mythology, topaz is one of the sacred gems of the Kalpa Tree. Citrine, known as the 'merchant's stone,' represents prosperity and abundance. Scottish Highlanders placed citrine on sword hilts for protection and courage.
Historical Significance
Russian imperial topaz was discovered in the Ural Mountains in the 18th century and reserved exclusively for the royal family, earning the name 'imperial topaz.' The Braganza Diamond, one of the largest stones in the Portuguese Crown Jewels, is believed by some gemologists to be a colorless topaz. Citrine has been used in jewelry since the Hellenistic period (300 to 150 BCE), though it was often mistaken for topaz.

Care & Handling
Topaz (Mohs 8) is hard but has perfect basal cleavage, meaning it can split along one plane if struck sharply. Avoid impacts to topaz rings and never use steam cleaners. Prolonged sunlight can fade some topaz colors. Citrine (Mohs 7) is more resistant to cleavage but can fade with heat exposure. Clean both gems with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
