## The Garnet Surprise Mention garnet to most people and they picture a dark red stone — the birthstone of January, often seen in inexpensive jewelry. This perception barely scratches the surface. The garnet group is one of the most diverse in gemology, encompassing vivid greens (tsavorite), brilliant oranges (spessartine), color-changing blues (rare pyrope-spessartine), and extraordinary fire (demantoid). Some garnets rival the finest rubies, emeralds, and alexandrites in beauty and value. Garnet is not a single mineral but a group of closely related silicate minerals sharing a common crystal structure but varying in chemistry. The main gem species form a continuous chemical series, and many gem garnets are mixtures of two or more species. ## The Garnet Species ### Pyrope (Mg₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) Pure pyrope is deep red, colored by iron and chromium. Classic Bohemian garnets — the dark red stones beloved in Victorian jewelry — are pyrope. Fine pyrope displays a clean, vivid red without the brownish cast that plagues much garnet. Sources include Czech Republic (historic), Mozambique, Tanzania, and Madagascar. A remarkable pyrope variety is "Rhodolite" — a pyrope-almandine mixture displaying purplish-red to raspberry color. Rhodolite is one of the most popular and affordable colored gemstones, widely available in attractive qualities from Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and India. ### Almandine (Fe₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) The most common garnet, almandine is typically dark red to brownish-red. Much commercial "red garnet" is almandine. While abundant in nature, gem-quality almandine with good color and transparency is less common than its abundance suggests. Star almandine (displaying a 4-rayed or 6-rayed asterism) is a collector variety. ### Spessartine (Mn₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) Manganese garnet. Fine spessartine displays a vivid orange to orange-red — the "mandarin garnet" variety from Namibia and Nigeria is among the most visually striking garnets. Mandarin spessartine appeared in the 1990s and quickly became a market favorite. Fine stones of 5+ carats exceed $1,000 per carat. ### Grossular (Ca₃Al₂Si₃O₁₂) Calcium aluminum garnet. Two gem varieties are critically important: **Tsavorite**: Chrome-green grossular discovered in 1967 by Campbell Bridges near Tsavo National Park in Kenya. Tsavorite displays a vivid green colored by chromium and vanadium — comparable to fine emerald but with superior brilliance (higher refractive index) and no need for treatment. Tsavorite over 2 carats is rare; over 5 carats is exceptional. Fine material commands $3,000–$8,000 per carat. **Hessonite**: Orange-brown to cinnamon grossular, sometimes called "cinnamon stone." Sourced primarily from Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Hessonite has a characteristic "treacle" or "roiled" appearance caused by internal stress and zircon crystal inclusions. ### Andradite (Ca₃Fe₂Si₃O₁₂) Calcium iron garnet. The gem variety is the legendary demantoid: **Demantoid**: The rarest and most valuable garnet variety. Named for its diamond-like ("adamantine") luster, demantoid displays extraordinary fire (dispersion of 0.057, higher than diamond's 0.044). Fine demantoid is vivid green, colored by chromium. Russian demantoid from the Ural Mountains is the classic source, identifiable by characteristic "horsetail" inclusions of byssolite fibers — these inclusions are so valued that their presence actually increases the stone's worth. Newer deposits in Namibia, Madagascar, and Iran produce demantoid without horsetail inclusions. Fine Russian demantoid over 2 carats commands $5,000–$15,000 per carat. ## Color-Change Garnet One of nature's rarest phenomena in garnet is color change. Certain pyrope-spessartine garnets shift from blue-green in daylight to purple-red under incandescent light. Discovered in the Bekily deposit of Madagascar and later in Tanzania, color-change garnets are genuine collector rarities. The blue-green daylight color of fine color-change garnet is particularly noteworthy because blue is the rarest garnet color. A strong color change from blue-green to red-purple in a clean stone can command prices comparable to fine alexandrite. ## Garnet Identification Because garnets form continuous chemical series, identification requires measurement of refractive index, specific gravity, and ideally spectroscopy or chemical analysis. Key diagnostic features: - **Single refraction**: All garnets are singly refractive (cubic crystal system) — this immediately distinguishes them from ruby, sapphire, emerald, and tourmaline, which are all doubly refractive. - **No cleavage**: Garnets lack cleavage, contributing to good toughness. - **Absorption spectra**: Each garnet species has characteristic absorption patterns in visible light, measurable with a spectroscope. ## Treatments Garnet is one of the few gemstone groups that is almost never treated. No commercially significant heat treatment, irradiation, or filling is applied to garnets. What you see is what nature produced — a strong selling point in a market that increasingly values untreated gems. Rare exceptions exist: some hessonite has been reported with minor heat treatment, and occasional surface coatings have been detected on low-grade material. But for the main collector varieties — tsavorite, demantoid, spessartine, color-change — treatment is essentially unknown. ## Collecting Garnet Garnet offers collectors extraordinary diversity at accessible prices. A comprehensive garnet collection might include: - Fine rhodolite (purplish-red, $50–$300/ct) - Mandarin spessartine (vivid orange, $200–$1,500/ct) - Tsavorite (chrome green, $500–$8,000/ct) - Demantoid (brilliant green with fire, $2,000–$15,000/ct) - Color-change garnet (blue to red, $1,000–$10,000/ct) - Star garnet (asterism, $50–$500/ct) - Mali garnet (grossular-andradite, green to yellow, $100–$500/ct) The range of price points makes garnet accessible to beginning collectors while offering enough rarity at the top end to challenge advanced collectors for decades.
