About Kyanite (Cyprine)
Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral notable for its unusual property of having different hardness values in different crystallographic directions (Mohs 4–4.5 along the length, 6–7 across), forming bladed crystals in blue, green, gray, yellow, orange, and rarely colorless colors. Cyprine refers specifically to the blue variety of vesuvianite, not kyanite, though the term has sometimes been conflated historically. Gem-quality kyanite, primarily from Nepal, Brazil, and Kenya, produces vivid cornflower-blue to teal faceted stones prized by collectors.
