About Californite
Californite is a compact, translucent to opaque green variety of vesuvianite (idocrase) that closely resembles jade in appearance and is sometimes called 'California jade' or 'American jade.' Found in the Happy Camp area of Siskiyou County, California—its only significant source—it ranges from pale to deep green and is used for cabochons, carvings, and beads. Though not a true jade, its similar appearance, toughness, and attractive color make it a popular regional gem.
