## An Extraordinary Stone
The Star of India is a 563.35-carat blue-gray star sapphire — one of the largest gem-quality star sapphires in the world and certainly the most famous. It displays a well-defined six-rayed star (asterism) across its gently domed cabochon surface, and unusually, it shows stars on both sides of the stone, a feature caused by the even distribution of silk inclusions throughout the crystal.
The stone was formed in the gem gravels of Sri Lanka roughly two billion years ago, making it one of the oldest gemstones on public display anywhere in the world. Its blue-gray body color, while not the vivid blue of the finest star sapphires, provides an excellent backdrop for the sharp, well-centered star.
## Origin and Discovery
The Star of India was found in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), though the exact circumstances and date of its discovery are not precisely documented. It was likely found in the alluvial gem gravels of the Ratnapura district — Sri Lanka's historic gem-producing region, where river gravels concentrate sapphires, rubies, spinels, and other gems that have weathered out of metamorphic host rocks over millions of years.
The stone passed through gem dealer networks before being acquired by J.P. Morgan, the American financier, who donated it to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City in 1900 as part of a major gem and mineral collection. Morgan's donation, valued at the time as one of the most important mineral gifts in American museum history, established the AMNH as a leading institution for gemological display.
## The 1964 Heist
The Star of India might have remained quietly famous, known mainly to gemologists and museum visitors, if not for one of the most audacious gem heists in history.
On the night of October 29, 1964, three men — Jack Murphy (known as "Murph the Surf"), Allan Kuhn, and Roger Clark — broke into the J.P. Morgan Hall of Gems at the AMNH and stole the Star of India along with the DeLong Star Ruby (100.32 carats) and other gemstones valued collectively at over $400,000 (approximately $4 million in today's dollars).
The theft was remarkably simple. The museum's security was inadequate by modern standards:
- The thieves entered through an unlocked bathroom window on the fifth floor
- Several display cases were not alarmed
- The battery in the alarm system for the Star of India's case had been dead for months
- Security guard patrols were infrequent and predictable
The three men pried open the display case, took the Star of India, the DeLong Star Ruby, and several other gems, and left the building undetected.
### Recovery
The thieves were arrested within two days. Murphy and Kuhn were identified through tips — Murphy, a beach boy and small-time criminal from Miami, had been talking about the planned heist openly enough that word reached police. The men were found at a Miami Beach motel.
The Star of India was recovered relatively quickly — it was found in a locker at a Miami bus station. However, the DeLong Star Ruby was not recovered until 1965, when ransom negotiations (conducted through intermediary John D. MacArthur) resulted in its return in exchange for $25,000 dropped at a designated location in Florida.
### Aftermath
Murphy and Kuhn were convicted and sentenced to prison terms. Murphy later gained additional notoriety for committing murder after his release, earning a life sentence in 1970.
The heist exposed serious security deficiencies at major American museums. The AMNH overhauled its security systems, and the case became a landmark in museum security history. The story was adapted into a 1975 film, "Murph the Surf," and has been the subject of multiple books and documentaries.
## Gemological Significance
### Asterism
The Star of India's six-rayed star is created by dense inclusions of rutile (titanium dioxide) needles oriented along three crystallographic directions within the sapphire's hexagonal crystal structure. When light strikes the curved cabochon surface, it reflects off the needle inclusions and converges into three intersecting lines, forming the six-rayed star.
The quality of a star is evaluated by:
**Sharpness**: How well-defined each ray is. The Star of India displays a moderately sharp star — not the sharpest ever seen, but well-defined for a stone of its enormous size.
**Centering**: Whether the star sits centered on the dome. The Star of India's star is well-centered, which is more difficult to achieve in very large cabochons.
**Completeness**: Whether all six rays extend fully to the girdle. The Star of India shows complete, even rays.
**Brightness**: How brightly the star reflects against the body color. The grayish-blue body provides good contrast for the silvery-white star.
### Double Star
The Star of India's most unusual feature is that it displays a star on both sides of the stone. This occurs because the rutile silk is evenly distributed throughout the entire crystal, not concentrated near one surface. In most star sapphires, the silk is concentrated near the top, and the bottom is either left rough or displays only a faint star.
### Size and Rarity
At 563.35 carats, the Star of India is among the largest facet-grade sapphires in existence. Star sapphires of this size are extraordinarily rare — the crystal must be large enough to yield a cabochon of this weight while maintaining sufficient silk density for a good star. Most large sapphire crystals either lack the silk needed for asterism or are too opaque for an attractive gemstone.
## Current Display
The Star of India remains on permanent display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, now in the Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals (renovated and reopened in 2021). It is displayed in a modern, climate-controlled case with comprehensive security systems — a significant upgrade from the conditions that allowed the 1964 theft.
The stone is not insured for a specific amount. Its combination of size, quality, provenance, and historical significance makes it effectively irreplaceable — no comparable star sapphire exists on the market, and any insurance valuation would be speculative.
