About Wax Opal
Wax Opal is a variety of common opal with a distinctive waxy to greasy luster and honey-yellow to brownish-yellow color, lacking the play of color characteristic of precious opal. Its warm amber to golden-yellow tones and smooth waxy surface have been likened to beeswax, giving it a warm organic appearance that is fashioned into cabochons and beads. Wax opal occurs in silica-rich sedimentary and volcanic environments and is found in Brazil, Mexico, and Hungary.
