About Smithsonite
Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate mineral that occurs in a remarkable range of pastel colors including mint green, sky blue, pale lavender, pink, yellow, and white, typically forming botryoidal, stalactitic, or rhombohedral masses with a vitreous to resinous luster. Named after mineralogist James Smithson (founder of the Smithsonian Institution), it is found in the oxidized zones of zinc ore deposits in Namibia, Greece, Mexico, and Sardinia. Its soft pastel hues and waxy surface make it a popular cabochon and carving material.
