About Sard

Sard is a brownish-red to reddish-orange variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz), whose warm earthy color is produced by iron oxide impurities in concentrations slightly different from those producing carnelian. Used extensively in ancient Greece and Rome for intaglio seals and carved cameos, it was considered one of the most important engraving stones of the ancient world. Fine sard comes from India, Brazil, and Uruguay, where it occurs in volcanic rock cavities.
