About Marialite

Marialite is the sodium-rich end-member of the scapolite mineral group, a sodium calcium aluminosilicate, forming colorless, white, gray, or pale yellow prismatic crystals with a vitreous luster in metamorphic and igneous environments. It was named in 1866 for Maria Rosa vom Rath, wife of German mineralogist Gerhard vom Rath, and occurs in calcium-poor metamorphic rocks, granites, and skarns in localities including Brazil, Madagascar, and Canada. Yellow and violet scapolite varieties occurring near the marialite composition are fashioned into faceted collector gems.
