About Hypersthene
Hypersthene is a magnesium iron silicate in the pyroxene group, notable for displaying a distinctive copper-red to bronze metallic sheen known as schiller—caused by thin-film interference from oriented iron oxide inclusions—giving it a quasi-metallic surface luster. It forms in mafic igneous and metamorphic rocks and is found in localities in Labrador (Canada), Norway, the USA, and Greenland. Cut as cabochons, hypersthene produces an unusual dark gemstone with a moving, flame-like bronzy schiller highly prized by collectors.
