About Ekanite
Ekanite is an extremely rare calcium thorium silicate mineral found in gem-quality form only as river gravel pebbles from Sri Lanka, named after F.L.D. Ekanayake who first brought it to scientific attention. It is one of very few naturally radioactive gemstones cut and sold—its thorium content causes internal structural damage over time through a process called metamictization. Fine transparent green ekanite displays an attractive four-rayed asterism and is among the world's rarest faceted gemstones.
