About Cuprite
Cuprite is a vivid red copper oxide mineral forming deep ruby-red to almost black isometric crystals with an extremely high refractive index and adamantine luster, producing faceted gems of extraordinary brilliance—sometimes called 'ruby copper.' Fine transparent crystals and the variety 'chalcotrichite' (hair-like crystal growths) come primarily from Namibia's Onganja Mine and Chessy, France. Despite its optical magnificence, extreme softness (hardness 3.5–4) limits its use to protected collector gems.
