About Cinnabar
Cinnabar is a vivid scarlet to crimson mercury sulfide mineral that has been used as a red pigment—known historically as vermilion—for over 9,000 years in art, cosmetics, and ritual. The mineral's brilliant red color made it valued in ancient China for lacquerware and in Mesoamerican cultures for ceremonial objects, though its mercury content makes it toxic. Large, brilliant crystals and massive carved cinnabar lacquerware from China are collector treasures.
