About Chalcopyrite
Chalcopyrite is a brassy yellow copper iron sulfide—the most important copper ore mineral—that develops a gorgeous iridescent tarnish of purple, blue, gold, and red when its surface weathers, a phenomenon called chalcopyrite peacock ore. This vivid interference coloring on natural or acid-treated specimens makes it extremely popular as a decorative and collector mineral. Despite its brilliant surface display, raw chalcopyrite is too soft and reactive for use as a cut gem.
