About Ammolite
Ammolite is an opal-like gemstone derived from the fossilized aragonite shells of ammonites—ancient cephalopods that lived 70–75 million years ago—displaying spectacular iridescent colors across the full spectrum. The finest material comes from the Bearpaw Formation along the St. Mary River in Alberta, Canada, and is one of only a few biogenic gemstones recognized by CIBJO. Its colors, caused by light interference in thin layers of aragonite, can rival the finest play-of-color opals.
