About Periclase
Periclase is a magnesium oxide mineral (MgO) forming colorless to pale green or gray cubic crystals with perfect cleavage and a vitreous to adamantine luster, naturally occurring in contact metamorphosed dolomitic limestones and in some basic igneous rocks. Major natural occurrences include the Predazzo area of Italy and various limestone contact zones in Europe and North America. While synthetic periclase is important industrially as a refractory material, natural gem-quality transparent crystals are extremely rare collector pieces.
