About Matrix Opal
Matrix opal refers to precious opal occurring as thin veins, films, or scattered specks distributed throughout its host rock matrix rather than as a solid opal seam, producing a mottled or patterned appearance with play-of-color embedded in the surrounding brown ironstone or sandstone. The most famous type is the Andamooka matrix opal from South Australia, which is typically treated with a sugar-acid process to darken the matrix and enhance the color play. Ethiopian matrix opal and boulder opal from Queensland, Australia, are also prized types where the host rock is intentionally retained as a natural backing.
