About Magnetite
Magnetite is an iron oxide mineral (Fe₃O₄) naturally magnetic—the most magnetic of all naturally occurring minerals—typically forming opaque black octahedral crystals or granular masses with a metallic luster and black streak. It is one of the most abundant oxide minerals on Earth, present in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks on every continent, and was the basis for the first magnetic compasses (lodestone) in ancient China and Greece. In lapidary, polished magnetite is used in carvings and calibrated cabochons for its striking metallic luster.
