About Ivory
Ivory is the organic gemological material derived from the tusks and teeth of elephants, walruses, mammoths, hippopotamuses, and other large mammals, composed primarily of dentine with a characteristic creamy white to yellowish color and unique cross-hatched Schreger line pattern in elephant ivory. It has been carved into luxury objects, religious icons, jewelry, and inlay since prehistory, prized for its fine texture, workability, and warm luster. International trade in elephant ivory is now banned under CITES, making legal trade restricted primarily to antique pieces and alternative sources such as fossil mammoth ivory.
