About Hercynite
Hercynite is an iron aluminum spinel mineral, typically forming opaque to subtransparent dark green, black, or deep brown octahedral crystals with a vitreous to submetallic luster. It occurs in high-grade metamorphic rocks, basic and ultrabasic igneous rocks, and meteorites, with occurrences in Europe, Australia, and the USA. Transparent gem-quality material is extremely rare, and faceted hercynite is a significant collector's item due to its scarcity and unusual dark iron-rich composition.
