About Hematite
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral (Fe₂O₃) recognized by its striking metallic silver-gray to black appearance with a distinctive blood-red streak, the source of its name from the Greek word for blood. It is one of the most abundant iron minerals on Earth, forming in sedimentary, metamorphic, and hydrothermal environments on every continent, and has been used as a pigment (red ochre) and polish since prehistoric times. In gemology, hematite is fashioned into highly polished cabochons, beads, and carvings valued for their mirror-like metallic luster.
