Copal

Copal is a young, sub-fossilized tree resin that resembles amber but is much younger (hundreds to tens of thousands of years old rather than millions), often containing well-preserved modern insect and plant inclusions that may appear too pristine for genuine amber. Widely used as incense in Mesoamerican and African traditions, it is also sold commercially as amber, which can mislead buyers. Copal from Colombia, Madagascar, and East Africa is most common in the gem trade.
